Halitosis (Bad Breath)

Bad breath or halitosis is often a sign of dental disease, and can be persistent and have a major impact on a person. People with bad breath are generally unaware of this unless someone tells them. A way to test for the presence of bad breath is to lick your wrist, wait till it dries, and then smell it.

Typical causes of bad breath can be due to poor oral hygiene, and the presence of bacterial dental infections such as gum disease and tooth decay.

The treatment of halitosis depends on the cause. As it is the bacteria that is producing the bad breath, elimination of the bacteria can consist of professional cleaning, as well as treatment of decayed teeth or broken fillings. Because bad breath can be a sign of dental infection, if left untreated the infection can potentially get worse, resulting in gum disease, toothache and severe pain, which may require more extensive management.
