There are two main forms of gum disease – gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the earlier form of gum disease, which when treated, is completely reversible. It is usually caused by bacterial infection around the gums and teeth, resulting from poor oral hygiene or improper toothbrushing technique. Signs of gingivitis include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing
- Constant bad breath
- Gum inflammation (red and swollen gums)
- Gum tenderness
When treated early and in a timely manner by our dentist from Emerald Dental Care, gingivitis is completely reversible. Treatment can be in the form of removal of plaque and bacteria with an ultrasonic instrument. Once the gingivitis is under control, regular six-monthly maintenance will be adopted to prevent its reoccurrence.
