Periodontal disease, or gum disease, as its name suggests, is the infection and inflammation of the gums and bones around the teeth. Gum disease can be completely painless, and it is estimated that the majority of adults will have some form of gum disease in their life.
There are two main forms of gum disease – gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the earlier form of gum disease, which when treated, is completely reversible. It is usually caused by bacterial infection around the gums and teeth, resulting from poor oral hygiene or improper toothbrushing technique. Signs of gingivitis include:
