Teeth Grinding Treatment

Teeth grinding and/or clenching is also known as bruxism, and occurs during the daytime, but more commonly at night during sleep. This is an extremely common problem amongst many patients, particularly ones who suffer from high levels of stress. There is also potential that people with bruxism may have undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea.

Signs and symptoms of bruxism

It is quite surprising that many people who suffer from bruxism are unaware of the condition. However, there are some very obvious signs and symptoms which may indicate the presence of grinding and/or clenching habits.

  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Morning headaches Sore jaw, neck or back
  • Clicking jaw
  • Snoring
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Waking up feeling unrefreshed despite having a solid sleep
  • Pain or tenderness of the muscles of the face and neck

Without prompt treatment, bruxism can lead to extensive and permanent damage to your teeth, with the nerve exposed in severe cases.

To help with the bruxism as well as the damage to the teeth that has already been caused, the following treatments may be considered:

  • Occlusal splint or night-guard: Protects the teeth from further wearing down
  • Orthodontics
  • Crowns and/or veneers: Used for restoring the broken and worn down teeth
